Health Education Information and Resource Services (HEIRS) is a health education, research and resource organization with an associated online community created to serve those suffering illness and disability from environmental illnesses. Just a few of these conditions include autism, asthma and allergies, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, multiple chemical sensitivity, PTSD, Gulf War Syndrome and conditions that are also environmental diseases but not generally regarded as such including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), COPD, diabetes, obesity, Parkinson's Disease, liver disease and conditions like sickness syndrome and ADHD. These are illnesses caused or aggravated by exposures to contaminants in air, soil and water and xenobiotics such as drugs, herbals, cosmetics, nutritional supplements, plants, food and animal toxins. In addition, we explore behavioral, genetic, cultural and biological factors that impact symptoms.  This site was developed to provide a mechanism to improve the overall quality of life for all those effected by these conditions.

The use of the following website pages, blogs, print, Facebook pages and other channels are different than other websites because it provides a real-time educational tool for learning more about these conditions, current research and a holistic approach to understanding them.  Within these channels, you will discover how genetic, nutritional, aging, population health and social influences may exacerbate or minimize symptoms and personal behavioral factors can positively alter the symptoms of environmental illnesses.  Even though many of these areas are ignored by many medical practioners, a holistic view and systems theory approach to  what causes environmental illness offers more insight into why disparities in their diagnosis exist and lead to complications in treatment.  A beneficial approach for professionals and patients might include nutrition and food preparation and safety education, development of a program to address housing issues, educate about travel and occupational considerations, promote healthier behaviors and address environmental factors that may augment symptoms, inform on when to do or not to exercise, advocate for participation in tasks and activities that improve cognitive function, etc.

In addition, we provide research document support of our hypothesis that dysregulation (ie. epigenetic changes) of the Nrf2-SIRT1-PGC-1a may be the "root" of these conditions. Environmental diseases have an increased level of inheritability and this pathway provides a viable mechanism that allows for inheritability and can explain the whole-body systemic health consequences because the pathway regulates so many genes or the consequences of others that indirectly influence the pathway such as the AhR, cGMP and CRF .  One could propose that through the inhibition or dysregulation of this pathway and gaining a better understanding of it, practitioners could provide a more manageable, long-term and more effective way to provide relief to patients with environmental disease.

Generally, the primary objective of all of the communication channels is to advocate, educate, coordinate and provide services and resources to patients and families, provide training to all audiences including medical professionals in the physical and psychological aspects of these and other chronic health conditions with environmental influences. In addition it also addresses and promotes activities and organizations committed to advocating for health, environmental and social  issues including nutrition science, environmental health, education, protection and preservation of wildlife and natural resources, accomodation, emergency preparedness, domestic violence, unemployment, access to proper healthcare and others including pet and service animal concerns because their availability and health impacts human health and well-being.
